Painting (2023)

I took ARTT320: Elements of Painting during my first semester at the University of Maryland. Prior to taking this class, I would paint on smaller canvases, but never on a larger canvas; I found out that painting on large canvases is an immersive, meditative experience! Through the class, I learned different painting techniques, such as “underpaint/overpaint,” “wet in wet,” “glaze” and “impasto.”

The Painting Process

To start, I sketch out my design on the canvas with a pencil. Then, I take a kneaded eraser to my sketch so that the pencil marks won’t show through the paint (graphite is shiny). Next, I create an “underpainting” by diluting paint with a gel gloss medium. After I’m satisfied with the underpainting, I start painting in the larger shapes before moving on to the smaller ones. Some colors, like yellows, are not as opaque as I would like, so I use the “glazing” technique by painting the area white before diluting the paint with medium - this creates a seemingly opaque, but vibrant result!
